Upon completing this chapter, you will be able to:
1.1 Scope and General Approach
Article 500 through Article 517 of the 2023 NEC cover special occupancies. These are locations where the nature of the environment or the activities conducted within them create hazards beyond those of ordinary commercial or industrial occupancies. The master electrician must understand that these articles modify and supplement the general requirements of Chapters 1 through 4. Where a special occupancy article conflicts with a general requirement, the special occupancy article prevails.
The primary special occupancies covered in this chapter are:
1.2 Hazardous Locations — Article 500
1.2.1 Classification Fundamentals
A hazardous location is defined by the presence of flammable gases, vapors, liquids, combustible dusts, or ignitible fibers/flyings. The NEC uses a two-part classification system: Class (type of hazard) and Division (probability of hazard presence).
Class I — Flammable gases, vapors, or liquids. Examples: petroleum refineries, paint spray booths, solvent storage areas.
Class II — Combustible dusts. Examples: grain elevators, coal preparation plants, sugar processing facilities.
Class III — Ignitible fibers or flyings. Examples: textile mills, woodworking plants, cotton gins.
Division 1 — Hazard exists under normal operating conditions, or during frequent repair or maintenance operations, or where equipment failure could simultaneously cause a release and an electrical fault.
Division 2 — Hazard exists only under abnormal conditions, such as a container rupture or system failure, and the hazardous material is normally confined within closed systems.
1.2.2 Master-Level Considerations
The master must understand that the NEC also permits an alternative classification system using Zones (Article 505 for Class I, Article 506 for Class II and III). Zone classifications use Groups and Zones (0, 1, 2) and are based on the international IEC system. A master supervising work must ensure that the design documents clearly specify which classification system is being used — mixing Division and Zone equipment is not permitted without proper evaluation.
Temperature classification is a critical master-level concern. Every piece of electrical equipment in a hazardous location must be marked with a temperature code (T-code) such as T1 through T6. The T-code indicates the maximum surface temperature of the equipment. The equipment T-code must be lower than the ignition temperature of the specific hazardous material present. For example, hydrogen has an ignition temperature of approximately 500°C, requiring a T1 rating (450°C maximum) or lower.
1.2.3 Wiring Methods — Article 501
For Class I, Division 1 locations, the NEC requires threaded rigid metal conduit or threaded steel intermediate metal conduit. Listed cable types with appropriate fittings may be permitted where specifically allowed. All conduit must be threaded with at least five full threads engaged. Explosionproof equipment must be used, and seals must be installed within 18 inches of enclosures containing arcing devices.
For Class I, Division 2 locations, the wiring methods are less restrictive but still require sealed fittings and the use of equipment suitable for the location. General-purpose enclosures may be permitted for devices that do not arc under normal operation.

The master must verify that seals are installed after the conduit is in place and that the sealing compound is poured and allowed to cure before conductors are pulled through. This is a common inspection point.
1.2.4 Class II and Class III Locations — Articles 502 and 503
Class II locations require dusttight or dust-ignitionproof equipment. The key distinction is that dust accumulation can create an ignition hazard through heat buildup or interference with equipment operation. Wiring methods must prevent the entry of dust into enclosures. For Class III, equipment must be designed to prevent the escape of fibers and to prevent the accumulation of fibers that could create a fire hazard.
1.3 Commercial Garages — Article 511
1.3.1 Scope and Classification
Article 511 applies to locations used for service, repair, or storage of vehicles that use volatile flammable liquids or flammable gases as fuel. This includes passenger vehicles, trucks, and buses. The classification of areas within a commercial garage depends on the presence of pits, lifts, and ventilation.
Key classification rules (Section 511.3):
1.3.2 Master-Level Application
The master electrician must evaluate the ventilation system carefully. If ventilation fails, the classification reverts to the unventilated condition. Therefore, the electrical design must account for the worst-case scenario, or the ventilation system must be provided with an interlock that de-energizes equipment in the classified area upon ventilation failure.
Wiring and equipment in the classified areas must comply with Article 501 requirements for Class I, Division 2 locations. This includes:
Floor drains and pits require special attention. A pit that is unventilated is Division 1. If the pit is provided with continuous mechanical ventilation, it may be classified as Division 2. The master must verify that ventilation is truly continuous and not merely intermittent.
1.3.3 Special Equipment Requirements

1.4 Aircraft Hangars — Article 513
1.4.1 Classification
Aircraft hangars are classified based on the presence of aircraft fueled with volatile flammable liquids or gases. The entire floor area of the hangar, including any below-floor work areas, is classified as Class I, Division 2, up to 18 inches above the floor. The area within 5 feet horizontally from aircraft nacelles or fuel tanks is also Division 2.
1.4.2 Master-Level Requirements
Article 513 has specific requirements that differ from commercial garages:
The hangar floor area classification extends to 18 inches above the floor throughout the entire hangar, not just in specific work areas. This is a common exam trap — candidates often assume the classification is limited to service pits or specific zones.
1.5 Gasoline Dispensing and Service Stations — Article 514
1.5.1 Classification of Dispensing Areas
Article 514 applies to locations where gasoline or other volatile flammable liquids are dispensed to vehicle fuel tanks. The dispensing area is classified based on the location of dispensing devices and the surrounding area.

1.5.2 Underground Tanks and Piping
Section 514.9 requires that underground storage tank systems comply with applicable codes and standards. The electrical equipment associated with submersible pumps and tank gauging must be suitable for the location.
Sealing requirements are critical at dispensing stations. Conduits entering the dispenser must be sealed, and the seal must be accessible for inspection. The master must verify that:
1.5.3 Circuit Disconnects
Section 514.11 requires a clearly identified switch or circuit breaker to disconnect all electrical equipment in the dispensing area. This disconnect must be located remote from the dispensing equipment and must be capable of being locked in the open position. The master must ensure that this emergency disconnect is properly labeled and accessible.
1.6 Health Care Facilities — Article 517
1.6.1 Scope and Applicability
Article 517 is one of the most complex articles in the NEC. It applies to buildings or portions of buildings where patients are examined, treated, or cared for. This includes hospitals, nursing homes, outpatient clinics, dental offices, and ambulatory surgical centers.
The master electrician must understand that the requirements of Article 517 are based on the type of care provided, not the building classification. A small dental office may have requirements similar to a hospital if certain procedures are performed.
1.6.2 Wiring and Protection Requirements
